Won too many awards to carry!

Report of the 1952 club dinner and presentation.

1952 12 12 Uxbridge and West Drayton GazetteThis report includes an explanation of the mysterious benefactor who donated the Malayan Cup.

Over a year ago, several members of Northwood Wheelers were in a public house for a casual drink. Another drinker heard that the conversation was about cycling and joined in he told the cyclists his name was Mr R. J. Moreton and that he was a rubber planter home on leave from Malaya. He later presnted them with a cup for competition in memory of Britsh planters killed in that country.

This cup - the Malayan Trophy - was among others presented to winners at Northwood Wheelers' Anuual Dinner at the Clay Pigeon on Friday.

Chief prize winner was Mr A. Stratman.

When he came up to receive his trophies from the wife of the President, Mrs. J. Jarvis, he had so many that he was unable to carry them, and piled medals into his largest trophy and some more into his top pocket.

During the season he won all the senior championships and broke two records. His total "bag" for the evening was two silver cups, five gilt medals and tem first-place medals.

The Malayan Trophy for the junior champion went to Mr. K. Dopson, who also took two gilt medals and asilver standard for junior competitions,

KEW TRAINING

Proposing the toast to the club, Mr P. Fuller, of the South Ruislip Cycling Club, told nearly 100 members and guests: "In these days of faster cycling the old ideas of training have been superseded by more scientific methods, and one must look into one's diet."

The toast to the President was proposed by Mr. C. Turner, the organizer of the dinner. Mr Jack Sharpe, who had made a special trip from his home in Wales for the occasion, replaying, said that in the history of British sport there was not a cleaner or healthier activity. "The rider has to be fit in mind and body if he wants to be successful." he added.

Toastmaster was Mr R. Houston.

[The 1951 presentations were apparently held over from the 1951 dinner owing to a misunderstanding (I don't know what that was, but it's referred to in the December 1952 Newsletter. I think that Roger Bingham's two medals are the ones that turned up at a Czech auction site in 2023]
