Tyre Trouble Caused Spills On The Grass

ABOUT 800 people attended the grass track cycle race meeting at the Headstone Manor Recreation Ground on Saturday, and the number of competitors was almost double that at either of last year's meetings. There were the usual spills, but no one was seriously injured.

During the 1 1/2-miles Course de Prime event there was an anxious moment when C. Turner. of the Northwood Wheelers, went through the rope into the spectators, following a collision with L. C. Pearse, of the Willesden Cycling Club, whose tyre had rolled off. Several people were hit as chairs went flying, and a small boy had to be treated for cuts and bruises on his forehead by men of the 28th Harrow St. John Ambulance Division.

In another race. the Rickmansworth Cycling Club two lap sprint championship, W. H. Alley and K. M. Avogardri were in collision and Alley sustained severe bruising of the ribs. He lay where he had fallen but after treatment by St. John Ambulance men, rode again later in the afternoon. His watch was torn from his wrist by the impact. Only two riders remained in the race.

Inter-Club Event

An inter-club event, the four laps Italian pursuit, was spoiled when three of the four Rickmansworth competitors had to drop out with tyres off. The result was awarded to the Yiewsley Club.

The event was opened by Mr. 0. G. Collins, chairman of Harrow Council, who started the first race, and there were numerous thrilling finishes. In the club match between Rickmansworth and Yiewsley, which is to be continued at the second meeting on July 29 at the same track, Yiewsley led by ten points to four. The meeting was organised under N.C.U. rules by the Rickmansworth Cycling Club in conjunction with the Harrow Council, as part of the Council's entertainments season.

The officials were: R. T. Matthews handicapper; E. C. Harding, timekeeper; Ivor J. Clark, judge; F. T. Mortimer, starter; J. T. Barham and T. A. Hart, announcers; S, W. Livingstone and G. Rowlands_ competitors' marshals; P. H. Lovell, event secretary; and W. H. Alley, machine examiner.
